what defines computer viruses as "not alive"?

They don't have cells, so they aren't alive.

EAT YOUR WORDS.

EAT THEM.

SCIENCE IS LIKE GOD, IT SMITES ALL THOSE WHO DOUBT ME. EXCEPT IT ACTUALLY EXISTS. OR IT IS GOD. IT DOESNT MATTER.

IT SMITES MY ENEMIES, AND NOT ME.

EVEN THOUGH I ACT LIKE AN ASSHOLE

I AM STILL RIGHT. so ignore this thread.

because attempting to voice your disagreement will only invoke the wrath of science, silencing you.

prove me wrong.

P.S. seriously. read the article. the last time something like this happened was when einstein formulated general relativity. predictions have been made and fulfilled based on this new theory.

tl;dr - the random bullshit i have been spouting for the last few months is now considered a serious scientific theory. i dont need to say "up yours" to the people who think im full of shit. science is saying it for me.

this is my last troll thread.

EDIT: lol. jk.*

*this will not be the last thread.

For a moment I thought the title said "my forum trolling is now coming to an end" I clicked on it and reread the title and cried :(

Very interesting read. If you think about it, earth is living, each animal is a cell that works in a system on earth ;).

On a side note:

DB, your a fucking ass hole, and this is why no one here respects you, not because of the ideas you have said.

So in short,

Shut the fuck up.

Also at brindle: something does not require cells in order to be categorized as living. Life is a series of processes, not a substance. Therefore if we find life on other planets the living things do not necessarily require cells to live. In fact, we already have things such as viruses which are in some senses alive but they cannot reproduce on their own and require other living things to survive, similar to zombies.

I don't think you can call it a "serious" scientific theory... the definition of life as we know it includes the following that the earth is incapable of:

Reproduction - I see no string of baby earths being formed.
Response to Stimuli - the Earth will continue to orbit the sun indefinitely, obeying the natural laws of gravity.

I suppose if human kind gained the technology to terraform new planets into earth like environments you could make an argument for reproduction. However it would be a closer analogy to say that humans are a virus taking over and hijacking other cells, retooling them for the purposes of continued reproduction.

You could make an argument that the earth is something more than just a planet, but by the scientific definition of life as we know it, it does not fit into that category.

The first thing that popped into my mind before reading the article (and after reading HAL's post) was the Gaia hypothesis about the Earth and all life on it forming a complex self-regulating "organism" of sorts.

It might not exactly fit the bill of "life as we know it" since there is no string of baby Earths, but it is an interesting line of thought that Earth-originating life colonizing other worlds might constitute some form of reproduction, as spreading life elsewhere would increase chances of life in general continuing on, which is kinda what reproduction does.

So, yeah. Colony ships to other planets would effectively become interplanetary spermatozoon... O-O

you cannot declare the carbon atoms in a cell "alive" but they are an integral part of that life, without them there could be no "life" so are they where "nonliving" + "nonliving" = "living"?

or should they be considered alive? the real question is do you think the current system of defenitions is sufficient, despite all its exceptions and its near-uselessness as an analytical tool because of all those exceptions

Reproduction - I see no string of baby earths being formed. yet you see stars explode in the sky, their debris reforming into other stars and planets.
Response to Stimuli - the Earth will continue to orbit the sun indefinitely, obeying the natural laws of gravity. yes, it will. until something interferes with it, until it gets a stimuli

whether that be from the humans who evolved on it, which as residents of earth can be considered a part of the earth, part of its living system

or from a huge asteroid that will knock it off course

planets react to external stimuli the same way living things do. they react the way the laws of physics and chemistry predict them to.

I suppose if human kind gained the technology to terraform new planets into earth like environments you could make an argument for reproduction. However it would be a closer analogy to say that humans are a virus taking over and hijacking other cells, retooling them for the purposes of continued reproduction. whether humanity gains this ability or not doesnt matter. the fact that living things can alter the climate and chemical composition of a planet is proof of concept.

You could make an argument that the earth is something more than just a planet, but by the scientific definition of life as we know it, it does not fit into that category. that is what this is. it is a redefining of the way we look at the world, an attempt to move back to get a better view of the whole picture, rather than just comparing pixels to the pixels directly next to them.

well, that, or you could consider that we're all just using multiple different names for things which are almost identical to each other in every sense except scale.

maybe all "types" of "colony ship" should be classified a such, to simplify things so people can understand them easier, rather than going "DERP DEPR DERP, I DON UNDERSTAND IT SO IT MUSNT BE TRUE, HERP DERP FURKURDURRR"

effectivelly, we would be resorting to analogies to try and find new things, and for most people, nothing communicates an idea better than an analogy

because most people are fucking retarded, and cant understand anything that they dont already understand, which is why analogies work so good, they take something a person already understands and shows them how to use that understanding, with a little analytical ability, to understand something else

no, its called science now

ill still be doing it, but what i say will matter a tiny, tiny bit more than what you say

not much, but just enough that every single thing you could ever possibly say to me also applies to yourself
