Well, Goodbye, maybe soon...
I've about had it. I've been trying through both posting on message boards, and through a high priority customer service request to get my stuff fixed.
I have been playing SS for years using a Linux account. As of December 22 of last year I can't login.
No real response to any request that I've put in.
My main account expires in less than 2 weeks. My secondary account about a month after that, and my final account expires in June.
I'm not spending another dime until I can log in. And I completely, and absolutely FUCKING REFUSE to use Windows anyfuckingthing.
I guess my happiness with SS is almost at an end. I'm a oportunist, so I'll give it a bit more time.
We'll see...

Of all the OS people use on their computers, the 2011 data is that:
Windows(All): 87.0% Mac OS X: 6.7% Linux GNU: 1.0%
Yeah, the SMALL game is going to try catering to Linux users when 97% of its members use a form of Windows, with 2% being Max OS X. I'm sure the one Linux user that refuses to use Mac or Windows is sooo valuable to the game.

Re: Well, Goodbye, maybe soon...
That's a bit silly. I put a Windows partition on my Mac machine to play C2 when I couldn't get wine to work. I don't use it for much else.

Linux + Mac OSX are not officially supported by the dev team, though I did bring up your concerns with Jey and Jeff personally and they did some checking last night. They responded to your bug forum post too.

Linux, besides being free, is a much more open and customizable OS. It's more difficult to use properly, but you can do practically anything you want with it, as opposed to commercial OS's which insist on locking you in a rubber room so you don't break anything.

Except play SS, by the looks of it.

Re: Well, Goodbye, maybe soon...
I noted in my bug post that the Windows partition I have on my laptop, which I keep there for testing purposes won't run the game either. Of course, it won't run much else, regardless of how "clean" I have it due to
a) My laptop is old. I can run hundreds of things on Linux due to it's higher capability, and Windows bogs it down horribly.
b) I get some weird error on SS where it doesn't take the password. I've double and triple checked, I have no keylogger or any other viruses, but no matter what you type into a password box, nada...
Anyway, if I can't play on Linux, I guess I won't play at all. And if the trolls on this forum don't want me, then they don't want any other peple regardless of operating systems or players... Gotta love trolls.

Re: Well, Goodbye, maybe soon...
There's someone who's got it working on wine, so just compare notes with them. On the other hand, maybe your machine is too old in some critical respect.

Re: Well, Goodbye, maybe soon...
The laptop.. uh, maybe, although it was working fine just prior to the last main client patch.
My new gaming PC is less than 6 months old, with a brand new video card.
It's having the exact same problems.
Oh and in response to the data above... (the chart of Linux, Mac, Windows users) most Linux and Mac users using Wine report system statictics with the operating system they are EMULATING. Windows.
So the data above is bullshit.

Re: Well, Goodbye, maybe soon...
Of all the people I've met, the only two that used Linux were my little bro(I absolutely suck at computers), and Jey.
Of the remainder, I've only met 4 MAC OSX users. Everyone else has some form of ACTUAL Windows OS. Not an emulator, the full OS, on a computer that was built to use that OS.
All my friends, both in game and in RL, across 14 states(and US territories over seas), and other countries, have told me similar results.
So my conclusion is that even if you counted Linux people with emulators for windows, it still doesn't account for enough people to make Jeff_L try to support it over Mac, if Mac was to be supported at all.
Linux based servers, now that accounts for 66% of all server OS. That is usually the mistake people make. Just because SS uses a Linux Server doesn't mean we're actually all Linux users.
