Re: login grey screen
I would say you don't have enough memory, but your specs say otherwise so hard to say.

Re: login grey screen
Have you tried setting the graphics to low? That solved my problems. I had something similar to that, even though I'm using Windows 7. Also, is anyone else having trouble opening the game now? Mine won't let me log in

its 512mb 8800GT driver date: 11/09/2011, does the login screen have over 500mb of textures?

Did it ever say it was generating normal maps? If you don't remember, uninstall and reinstall then try running on high the first time you start it up ( i don't think it will generate if it's on very high, at least it didn't used to). Make sure you right click the launcher and run as admin. Otherwise, there might be a permission issue when it tries to create and insert the newly generated normal maps into the SS folder in /program files/ (which is sometimes protected depending on your security settings).

Re: login grey screen
i run XP so theres no run as admin. It does the popup about generating the maps on high but not on very high.
theres only the .dmp, the .exe and the .ini file in the root folder

Re: login grey screen
I used to have the 8800GT 512mb in three rigs in the house. They tend to somehow overflow on the memory causing stuff like that to happen as above. Its the graphics card drivers they never fixed it after or it could be literary the hardware. Its a very old card.
E.g. this used to happen when I used Macromedia Flash 8 along with C1 and stuff like that used to happen.
