That Copperling was actually kinda scary just staring at you close up at the beginning of the video like that, and the molten coppers looked really cool while they were tracking.

I love the frequent videos. Please keep it up!

Oh, and I think the music should be customizable by player so that admins can lock DemonBlood's game on a bagpipe version of "Jesus Loves Me" accompanied by banjos. Better yet, make it play at max volume when he logs on the forums too.

So, yeah. About 80% of SS (or at least, the portion that uses the forums) plays without sound. No matter how awesome the C2 music is, I doubt that number will change very much. Lots of people just prefer to listen to their own music, or have other things running alongside SS they need sound for.

well that poll only was a yes or no poll, it didn't get at the why. Perhaps the majority of those "i play without sound in C1" responses are due simply to the fact that the c1 music really really sucks. That's the main reason i play with the music off.

I'd deffo listen to the sophisticated C2 audio system. :)

The poll shows how the people who play the game didn't care about the sound at all.

Those who do care about sound, probably don't play. If the sound was better, perhaps those new players who do like good game music as well will play, thus a higher player base.

So the number will change, it will at least become more 50/50, because we will be taking in the people who do care about the music, or just don't want to listen to their own and don't want to deal with C1's music.

The problem i have with the music and effects is that i like to listen to vent too, sometimes. I keep the halo music on, for example.

If sound was given some sort of tactical benefit, it would be cool; IE, distant laser shots could be identified to be coming from a certain direction just by listening; Since different damage types have different sounds, you could tell where everyone was from sound alone.

If different ENGINES were given different sounds as well, then it would ramp things up even further, especially if they were still hearable even with low visibility. Just really hard to identify.

For example, this little chart:


A lion with a lion thruster to the north east of you;

0 3 9
0 1 3
0 0 0

Or alternatively, a seer with a qua vazuk, due south;

0 0 0
1 1 1
1 1 1

Somehow balance it so it becomes more diffuse the lower the visiblity is or something. As you see, the lion would be clearly distinguishable, but the seer would be extremely difficult to pinpoint, at the most, IF you have good hearing, being able to tell where they're NOT coming from. But you probably wont even know that.


Could give some good tactical use to having your sound on.

In addition to that, however, there should be a "Temporary Mute" button available; essentially a button that mutes all sound as long as you press it. If you made that button the same button you use for talking via vent, you could talk without annoying everyone with music/engine noises.

C2 is using the Irrklang sound/music library which supports 3d sound. All sounds like bullet shots and explosions are given a 3d coordinate when they're played and then the sound is adjusted based on where it occurs and where the camera currently is. If you have surround sound on your computer, then you can even tell when sounds are behind and in front of you, in theory, not just to the left and right.
