Well, when the first and famous Pilgrims came to the New World on the Mayflower and set up camp they formed their own local government and set up a socialist system of distributing the produce from their farms, etc. Predictably, the Pilgrims were soon near starvation. Approximately half of their number died during the first winter. As you can read in the journal of William Bradford, one of the leading men of the expedition, he soon realized that "the young men of the colony were not content to work to support the children of other men" (paraphrased). The colonists quickly did away with their socialist / communist system and allowed each family to retain the fruits of their own labors. Eventually, the colony thrived and formed the foundation of the colonies which eventually became the United States of America.

Tradition has it that once the colony started to thrive a harvest festival / feast was held with special emphasis on giving thanks to God for the blessings the colony had received. This is the basis for the current holiday of Thanksgiving. The turkey is just a tradition that was started in the early to mid 1800s. The myth is that Native Americans brought turkeys to the Pilgrims to save them from starvation, but there is no historical evidence of that.

In modern times the purpose of Thanksgiving is to show appreciation to Caelestis for all the hard work on the new UZ!

Just another quick update.

The Thanksgiving Event should start on Monday and Tuesday and last for the rest of the week.

There will be a few unique rewards for killing Butterball, the Bionic Turkey including a special holiday ship!

It's Tuesday, and there is a distinct lack of turkeys in space atm. Any update?

There is a patch planned for today sometime, I believe.

Is the Next Patch page on the wiki going to be used again? As far as i know it was only used for 1 or 2 patches. And it was good to see what was going in, what was still to be done, what was completed etc.
