The Diablo series was pretty groundbreaking in its genre. The second game in particular was just very well designed, with an amazing sound track and wonderfully gothic and mysterious landscapes. I think the series just strikes a really good balance between RPG and arcade shooter, with an emphasis on rare item collection. The third installment is the most multiplayer-oriented yet, while hopefully still staying true to the general style of the series.
It's not everyone's cup of tea but has a very solid base of fans, I would say.
The skill system has been changed a bit but still gives you a GREAT deal of customization. The way its designed also allows for on the fly re-specing with just a couple second delay in the skill becoming usable.
The action bar is a bit different and a couple other changes, like the blacksmith is levelable and you can dismantle items for materials to make your own through him.
I played the open beta like I said and though it was just the first act I loved it just as much as I did D2. All things considered, it was well worth the wait.
