The trouble with salvatore is that it's TOO traditional fantasy. I have peculiar tastes; I like a strange little habitable zone roughly between reality and high fantasy.

His work of the forgotten realms is but of one perspective. I see what you mean though, I guess I just dont have a problem with that :P Based on your perspective The Dark Elf trilogy would probably still interest you. Honestly Cleric Quintet aswell(though the first books development is somewhat slow)

In that case I would revise my list of recommendations to Abhorsen for fantasy (had one eyebrow raised through the first 5-6 chapters  ), Night Watch (and sequels), More than Human, The Gods Themselves, and Neuromancer.

What you're sounding like you're looking for is what I suggested. A Song of Ice and Fire series. =) If you watch TV Shows at all they're making it into a remarkable TV series titled after the first book, Game of Thrones. I watched the first season (which is the first book) before starting the books and it gave an excellent introduction to the series.

Haha, epic.

Edit: Oddly enough, upon closer inspection, I've already read about 7/8ths of those. >.<

Already read most of Card's work, and while I do enjoy it, the overall dark atmosphere it maintains somewhat drives me away. Even so, I've read Ender's Shadow like 4-5 times.
