Guide to Self-Flying a Gelato
I know I'm not the first to find that if you have a hitchhiker beam on a Gelato (or any ship with no engine) that you can use planets, stars, AI, etc to pull yourself through a galaxy. But I've figured out a way to travel through multiple galaxies without having another player to help you. If you are stationary to start, set your slave to guard the gate you want to travel through. As it flies away from you, lock on it with a hitchhiker and you will be towed in the direction of the gate too. If your slave gets out of range, just call it back to *Follow Me* and repeat until you get to a decent speed (just don't go too fast or you might screw up the next part.) Make sure that your slave is set to *Follow Me* before you go through the gate! If you don't you will be a buggy with no horse. Once through the gate, use the slave and any nearby objects to slingshot yourself in the direction of the next gate. Go through the next gate and repeat the steps as needed. I managed to get through 11 star systems this way with no help from other players. So, if you've got no one available to help you, or if you are just feeling self-reliant, I hope this helps. If you already knew how to do this, I don't care; this is for anyone who didn't know before.

Other tip: If you end up in a gal with nothing to tow, toss something, wait till it's a ways, away, and use it to slingshot yourself back to the gate from whence you came.

Carry perma drones on your SS/Thatch/Gelato and look for workhorse modded gear for tractor ships

Re: Guide to Self-Flying a Gelato
If you have high enough Programming, give slave orders to travel to galaxies as far as you need to go, or just a few galaxies ahead. Slave will take you to each warp and since it's being tractored, it isnt likely to jump before you and get too far ahead.

Re: Guide to Self-Flying a Gelato
also get radioactive mods where you cant find workhorse ones, theyll help you power your tractor.

Re: Guide to Self-Flying a Gelato
Engineers would typically be better at this than the other classes, due to their tractor skills.
However, a good aug setup for a tractor gelato is:
4x Heph [Low speed is both a blessing and a curse. Swap out for good capacities as required.] 1x Good Docking 1x Adv. Good Sardine
If you're not an Engineer, then: 3x Heph [Or good capacities] 1x Good Docking 1x Adv. Good Sardine 1x Good Traction
The Reindeer Harness Tractor is the strongest of the hitchhiker line. It is a Christmas drop, but you should be able to get your hands on one in trade.
Remember! The Alien Steam Power energy gives +50% tractoring!

Re: Guide to Self-Flying a Gelato
All fails miserably if you actually have any weight in your Thatch / Gelato... You will simply suck the slave in and not actually move forwards... it could take forever to get speed up to reach next galaxy... once you jump you have to somehow slow down by tractoring your slave... you could be 50k out by the time you have stopped! Then you haver to do it all again! Ouch... Just use a separate account and tractor by MCing...

Just like to point out this would only work with a thatch, since gelato is t10

Jey's Battle Sphere weighs a tonne, and he uses his slaves to pull himself around.

Re: Guide to Self-Flying a Gelato
I use heph, good docking, 4 good tractions on my thatch (380k hull), along with HW and RR, works pretty well at hauling around base gear and stuff.
Just have some workhorse and docktastic gear to make it even better. As Pala said, Alien Steam Power gives +50% tractoring and that is awesome. Ace in a Pill Tweaks are also very handy.

The use of several sardine augs instead of cap would take care of that. At least to a degree.
