After almost an hour with GIMP I finally got this. Not bad for a PS/GIMP newbie IMO.

The problem with images like these is all the HAIR. Same with wispy particle effects, they usually look like crap unfortunately.

I actially gave your pic a try when you first posted it spacer, but like biggee said, it just came out really bad and I eventually gave up on it. The more solid the line between background and foreground the better

There is a way to do it, but the individual hair particles don't look realistic once you cut them out because they are basically semi-transparent and pick up parts of the background usually. You can get around that by having a fade around the edge, but it doesn't work for some images.
