Post Cross-classing
Basically cross-classing means that you can have multiple classes. You would have a main class and then a secondary class, i.e. ShM as main, seer as secondary = seermonkey. Or something along those lines. Obviously if someone was able to obtain two classes to full strength it would become very broken (i.e. sniper mixed with gunner = mining dps beyond belief). But a solution to this is either make it so that the secondary class has an overall nerf to it, or you can only get your secondary class to like t5 or t10 etc.

As for how much it would cost sp wise, have it so that the secondary skill just continues on from where the main dropped off: 60sp per skill +1 each level. This would become very costly, keeping the amount of people able to possess high levels of secondary skills to a minimum.

Basically I like the idea. I've always been opposed to only allowing a single class per alt.

However the cost should start from scratch once the alt has reached full class skills for their primary class (T20 ShM would allow T20 SD, etc.) The secondary skills should cost 2x per level based on the primary skill costs. Tertiary skills would cost 3x per level and so on. I would limit the new classes to focuses that are not already known. (I.E., a ShM could not also be an Engineer. But even that kinda goes against my grain.)

Having maxed Piracy skills should reduce the cost by some percentage. After all Pirates are great innovators, able to master any and all ships they capture and by that I mean Piracy25 should be able to capture anything. (Oh gee Piracy25 doesn't exist ... yet!)

It would mean the entire game would need a revamp, so I doubt it will ever happen. The closest you can get to cross-classing is to combine the normal aspects of a class with another, hence why there are many examples like these:

Engineer that can heal, taking on Shield Monkey aspects
Sniper that is fast and agile, taking on a Speed Demon aspect
Gunner that is fast and agile, taking on a Speed Demon aspect
Seer that is visible and based around sustained DPS, taking on a sniper aspect
Speed Demon that is based around sustainable DPS at low speeds, taking on a sniper aspect
Sniper that is based around tanking and aggravation control, taking on a berserker aspect

Mmm, some effects of a class though can be achieved through their class specific augs and equipment. Maybe some kind of skill or mission that allowed you to use gear that had class restrictions, but be a different class yourself.

For example, let's say I'm a seer and I take berzerker research 20. I can now use up to tech 20 items that are class locked to a berzerker such as thanar's astral fire, and berzerker augs, art of destruction, etc. That might be a better way to implement "multiclassing" without making some really crazy and extreeme class skill interactions possible, such as a shmonk/zerker/engineer who's basically invincible, or the seer/sniper who just does ludicrous levels of sustained dps.

Still OP.

What if then you limited yourself to only 1 research, and that itself was limited to one item type, or maybe even 1 specific item?

Example, if you get sd item research, you can use class locked speed demon only items (brutal overloader for example). If you get berzerker augmenter research, you can use class locked berzerker only augs. If you get seer weapon research, you can use class locked seer only weapons. etc. etc. etc.

In addition you may only pick one class research skill.

There's really only one problem. I can't think of one thing that is gunner only that would be used by anyone.

Nevermind, this suggestion is epic, implement this now!

Post Re: Cross-classing
I like the idea, but I see major issues.

The only way this could be done without utterly altering all current game mechanics is if it was limited to players t21 and higher, so only new gear had to be designed accordingly.

There would also have to be tighter restrictions about who could be PvPed by players with multiple classes to prevent pure and effortless annihilation.

Also, limiting secondary class skills by piloting level might make sense - someone with p21 could maybe get 2 levels of the second classes skill, someone with p22 (I know its not out yet) could get 2 more, and so on. Otherwise the power boost would be too rapid and unbalanced - it would need to grow in parallel to new tech levels.

However I do like the idea of the suggestion, but might suggest that rather than having all classes open to you as a choice for a second, only have perhaps 2 choices available as secondary classes for each one. For example, maybe an engineer could also gain gunner and SD skills, while a zerker can gain some engineer and some seer skills - etc

Post Re: Cross-classing
I don't like it still. It makes the game less specialised, or the characters. One might argue that this idea leads to a multiude of 'different' classes, said classes are now much similar.

No.

Besides, we don't need it and it would only be a TON of work.

A shm was holding Zeus with a tractor while a DM was energy beaming everyone? So t21 isn't so far from class sharing IMO. But it doesn't come close ofc.
