Blender is good, or if your just starting wings3d works well and is more simple (its what I use).

I use Maya pretty much exclusively now, but I agree that Wings3D is good for beginners with its simple interface and because it's free.

Blender for the ship modeling.

GIMP for texture editing.

Tons of tutorials out there for both of these and they're both free to use.
