Blender is good, or if your just starting wings3d works well and is more simple (its what I use). |

I use Maya pretty much exclusively now, but I agree that Wings3D is good for beginners with its simple interface and because it's free. |

Blender for the ship modeling. GIMP for texture editing. Tons of tutorials out there for both of these and they're both free to use. |
