Not a good idea, the amount of planet spamming that'd go on...
If you want a ship that looks a bit like a planet get a sing sphere! :P

What would be the point of having this, then? If it were to give resources as a sort of long term investment, we'll see rich players getting richer. If there is no resources, then it must have a tactical value. And if it does have a tactical value the only way it would be useful is if it were to block non-ethereal weaponry, but them again you can already do that with drones or bases.

In addition, how could someone possibly go about balancing this? It would require so much coding and thought to make it a large project without much to show for.

So like I said before, it's just not possible to have happen.

Probably not for SS, but a cool idea anyway;

Planets don't generally come from nothing, so a more logical scenario would be to destroy planets/moons to create new planets/moons from. I'd imagine something like a "Planet Killer" is attached to a planet or moon that will slowly start to destroy the planet from the inside out. Similar to the tail of a comet, there would be space dust that accrues in your galaxy and is grabbed up by the gravity of the closest sun based on the destruction of planets. Once enough space dust is circling the sun, it begins to condense into an eventual planet.

Much more realistic/appropriate.

Yep. Loved the movie, hate the fact a lot of people see it and decide to use it as their own idea.
