It has been brought to my attention that a certain level 2700 player is killing any medium-ish level player he can find that goes into Perilous Space (e.g. level 600's).

I'm actually kind of OK with this, since Perilous Space is supposed to be perilous, and it has large PvP ranges there for a reason. Especially now that EF Space has much higher DF ranges, there is even less need for level 600's to go to Perilous than before.

It's been suggested by several people that this situation isn't really fair, especially since tech 21 went in.

First, we should probably increase the PvP max level. For those who don't know, there is a max level used in PvP range calculations, with the thought being that all characters above this level are generally equivalent, since there isn't much to spend SP's on past this level. The max PvP level is currently set at 1600. The current PvP range for Perilous space is +/- 65% , so a level 1 million player in Perilous Space could attack a (1600 * 0.35) level 560 victim. I do agree that someone in full tech 21 kit attacking a level 560 probably isn't that fair, even in Perilous.

Proposal 1: change the max PvP level to 2500.

Second proposal is to tighten the upper PvP ranges a little bit. I'm not so sure on this one, myself, but am offering it up for discussion.

For a reminder, our current PvP ranges are:
w0: 20%
w1: 35%
w2: 50%
w3: 65%
At war: +15% one-way, +30% two-way
Emperor declaration involved: +30%
When calculating if player A can attack Player B, check if max(level of A, level of B) * (1 - pvpRange) >= min(level of A, level of B)

The purpose of these ranges is to try to prevent players from killing other players that are extremely out of their range, while not inhibiting PvP too much. It's largely based on DF and war because lower level players who are not prepared for PvP are more likely to be in lower DF areas and to not be involved in wars. But as you move up into more dangerous territory, the ability to be attacked and to attack increases somewhat gradually.

If we were going to change this a bit, I would propose

Proposal 2:
w0: 20%
w1: 30%
w2: 40%
w3: 50%
At war: +25% one-way, +50% two-way
Emperor declaration involved: +30%

That tightens things up a little bit when war isn't involved, but actually open things up to full PvP in perilous space for mutual wars, which is probably a good thing.

If we combined both proposals, then the highest level person that a level 2700 player in perilous space could attack would be 1250.

My one concern with all this is that is that the PvP ranges are a bit arbitrary and confusing. We could always go the opposite way and do as we were planning and make EF layer non-PvP, and then make Perilous space completely open PvP. That way you know when you go in that you are going to get ganked hard-core, so you'd better bring your team with you.

Another semi-related change we should probably make is to make PvP ranges based on layer, rather than DF level, as that would be a lot simpler.

Proposal 2 sounds better. War should always be a major event. And war costs need to go straight through the roof too.

Edit: Layered pvp sounds cool too.

AP won't take you across the border into perilous unless you're level 700 or higher. It'd stop you right on the gate. You will have to manually press F to enter.

APing inside of Perilous is not changed. Just going from Wild Space to perilous via the staircases/peri outpost.

How's that?

Scratch that lock, didn't think it through. I say make pvp for a level 600 like level 500 to 700 imo..

downward hardcaps are a bad idea, i remember someone who said to me that there was some pvp/war situation where a high level SD was trying to fight a low level SD, 2k/600 range iirc, and the higher level SDs pvp range lapped and he couldnt shoot the noob but the noob could shoot him.
