Post Re: Randomness with Pinging Radars
yea I am constantly pinging
why does anyone have to hear our ping?
its not sonar.. infact its scientifically unrealistic because there is no medium for the sound to travel through in space.......

WELCOME TO STAR SONATA

but yeah, i dont really see any point in everyone hearing the ping from a radar

the vast majority of people who play SS, do it with the sound off... (maybe adding checkboxes for notification sounds, PM sounds, game SFX, and music might be a good idea, so that if players dont like the music, or the SFX, they can still hear the notifications)

That's easy, just delete the unwanted sounds and replace them with a blank sound file of the same name.

Ok, I'm about to crash and sleep (hopefully) but what I'm thinking is why another ship would hear the ping itself. If you are the target being pinged, maybe a different "you've been pinged" sound could play, but not to everyone in the area. Then again I rarely use ping-dars and I'm too tired to think straight right now. And my gramer is faling. ...

Somonre else figure otu where I was going with this. Good night. :P

There is no sound in space. All the argument you need :p

Yeah, that! Ther person being pinged would likely notice they've been scanned, but via thier own sensors and not soundwaves in space. No one else in the area has a reason to even hear the ping-detected noise.

A small point for logic in an otherwise space fantasy game ftw?

Space has a lower density of matter but isn't empty, sounds are there and can be heard. How else would the sound of the sun be recorded?

no space is a vacuum, and has no mass therefore no density
and yes it is not empty, but the particles are spread out enough in the vacuum that there is no continuous medium (matter) which soundwaves can travel through

If you actually paid attention to the video (I googled it), they measure the depth of the pulses to figure its sound, its based on a visual system not the actual sound waves produced

so rewatch it?

It's supposed to be a substitute for sound. The fact that someone is using an active ping radar means they are sending something out to bounce off your ship, and the sound you hear represents the detection of their radar pulse.

The detection is what they gain from pinging with the visibility, your thinking of submarines and sonar, there doesnt need to be a sound confirmation when someones pinging, itll screw over seers. I depend on that first shot to kill alot of people.

that "ping" sound is from sonar, and you implemented passive and active systems for radar, and active/passive radars dont exist

passive objects on radar are objects you dont want the radar to detect so it "passes" over it

active are the targets you want the radar to recognize "actively"

if you implement this it will fuck over my class, and I will most likely quit the game

I'm not sure why you say that. The ping on the passive radars gives you a huge visibility hit. The idea has always been that if you ping, you will be seen. This doesn't change it.

Are you saying that your stealth augs are enough that even while pinging people don't see you, or that you just depend on them not noticing you showing up on their radar when you ping?

havent read the thread, so forgive me if i point out something someone else might have...
if youre within a certain distance of someone who pings, you hear it, no? therefore, you can, with a reasonable amount of intelligence, find them.

You will only be seen from just pinging if there is another Seer near you. It adds an insignificant amount of vis.

A tone within visual range will make it so players with me targeted will only need to wait for the tone to open fire, snipers with their unbelievable tracking just need to wait for the tone and its a guaranteed hit
