Post subject:  Capital Gatling Lasers

Radiation and Mining type gatling lasers! They are, as the title hints at, Capital ship only. Basically, they're upgraded Point Defenses that are made from BP's dropped from Green Battleships, and work the same way as CAL's and the research BP's. However, seeing as there are two damage types, there will be two different research BP's: Radiation Gatling Laser Core Research and Mining Gatling Laser Core Research. Why is this needed? Capital ship weapons all have long range and high recoil. The Capital Gatling Lasers fill in this gap by having the opposite of long range and high recoil.

All Capital Gatling Lasers will have a recoil of .2, as well as follow the nomenclature and techs of the CAL family. Here are two examples:

Radiation Capital Gatling Laser Core
T13
Size: 35
Recoil: .2
Elec: 50
Range: 300
Damage: fit around those numbers
Radiation Damage
Capital ship only

Advanced Mining Capital Gatling Laser
T20
Size: 50
Recoil: .2
Elec: 75
Range: 255
Damage: fit around those numbers
Mining Damage
Capital ship only

These will have good DPS seeing as how they are hull locked, are larger, and take more elec than regular Point Defenses. They will have more DPS then the CAL line.

and terrible dph so that anything with soak can shred that gunner's dps.

Very few things actually have soak.

I don't know. Really big point defenses don't make sense to me, point defenses are designed to take down small targets like missiles or fighters after all. Why do you want high RoF capital weapons?

Helps fight stealthier targets, taking down multiple small targets such as clops, and applying debuffs to large amounts of targets. Not to mention that these weapons can sacrifice range for more damage.

Remember that these aren't point defences, they're gatling lasers. This means they only shoot forewards.

Unfortunately, I fail to see how that will accomplish what you're talking about, since turning your whole ship will almost certainly waste more time than would be lost just clicking and firing.

It would be nice if PD weapons were changed to physical damage though, to make them more useful at what they do.

I chose gatling laser name because point defense sounds not so great. Technically it is a PD.

I don't think it's possible to modify an individual weapon's crit chance...

Well, we already have mods that only work when the weapon is actively being used, yes?(dynamic, for example) So I can't imagine it would be that hard to make a weapon that reduces crit chance by 100% while it's being used.

Why would these smaller lasers do more dps? I think the bigger guns should do much more damage or these or the CAL series should get a grem and if this one did, nerf the damage below CAL.

The idea is:

Capital Arma Laser has 1000 DPS, 1000 Range, 3000 Elect, 1.0 Recoil, 400 size.

Capital Gatling Laser has 1000 DPS, 650 Range, 1500 Elect, 0.5 Recoil, 260 size.

Both are 360 degree tracking and requires a Capital Ship to use.

...eh? Please read the thread before posting, it helps.

That said, I really cannot agree with the main idea. Point defences are, ostensibly, for shooting down small agile targets such as missiles and fighters. Making a mining point defence is practically pointless at this, seeing how all missiles share a massive resistance to mining, and all light fighters also have this resistance.
