Why do we bank when we turn anyway? What is it we're banking against? Space air?

Up is a relative term. There is an up from the space ship, but in space there is no up because you are not referring to a direction based on an object.

I think pre-alpha we tried it w/o banking. For whatever reason in the 3d environment it was harder to pilot without it.

Perhaps scale it with the size/mass/weight of ships? It seems a bit odd for my dreadnought to bank, but perfectly fine for my panther.

Ever seen a Kirov-class battlecruiser bank into (exercise) attacking an enemy fleet? None have. They're 28,000 Tons; the heaviest surface combat ships still in service.

Would be ridiculous to expect they and other capital ships to handle like a fighter plane.
